Monthly snapshot: September 2024
Data month: September 2024Published retrospectively, November 2026Illustrative
Average daily production reported for September 2024 in the public well-level files for Alberta and Saskatchewan (Petrinex) and BC (BC Energy Regulator), compared with the previous month and with September 2023. Rates are monthly volume divided by calendar days, so month length does not distort the comparison.
| Group | Average rate | vs Aug 2024 | vs Sep 2023 | Wells producing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alberta oil | 2,218 | −3.3% | −2.6% | 42,150 |
| Alberta gas | 12,116 | −5.7% | −5.0% | 135,202 |
| Saskatchewan oil | 434 | −2.5% | −2.7% | 28,905 |
| Saskatchewan gas | 340 | −1.2% | −9.6% | 37,601 |
| BC oil | 12.9 | +3.2% | +88.3% | 689 |
| BC gas | 7,342 | −2.8% | +4.4% | 8,691 |
Rates: thousand bbl/d for oil, MMcf/d for gas. "Wells producing" counts well rows with volume above zero in the month. Oil and gas rows for the same well are counted separately.
What stands out
- Biggest move from the previous month (BC oil excluded, it is small and noisy): Alberta gas at −5.7%.
- Compared with a year earlier, BC gas was highest at +4.4% and Saskatchewan gas lowest at −9.6%.
- Seasonal context: in 2022 to 2025, September was typically −6.1% against trend for Alberta gas and −7.1% for BC gas (see Gas has a season), so part of a gas move in September is the calendar.
Notes
- These are sums of public well-level rows, not official provincial statistics. Rows with masked well IDs would be left out; none were present in the files we used.
- Figures come from files downloaded in November 2026; operators can revise earlier months, so numbers here may differ from what was first reported at the time.
- This page reports what the data shows and does not explain causes.
- Alberta oil includes crude bitumen from wells licensed for it (about three quarters of the oil-product volume over the last 12 months; see the inventory post).
